The battle of Stalingrad was from July 1942 to February 1943. At one point 90% of the city was held by Germany and the remaining Soviet forces were split. In November 1942 Mosin Nagant rifles and carbines were in Soviet hands when they pushed back launching numerous counteroffensives until the city was theirs again.
