The club will be holding 4 Military Bolt Action Benchrest shoots this Summer on the 200 Yard Range. The dates will be May 20, June 17, July15, and August 12. The program is listed below.
The purpose of the competition is to bring the older military bolt action rifles out to the range for some friendly competition and companionship. This evening benchrest competition will also provide a great way to develop a good load for your rifle. We will start firing around 5:30 pm and continue until everyone has had a chance to enter and shoot as many relays as they want, or until darkness sets in. The entry fee will be $3.00 per rifle or relay fired. Shooting will be at 200 yards on the NRA SR-42 target. We will hang 3 targets per bench. One for unlimited sighting shots. One for score (10 shots) and one for group (5 shots). A time limit of 25 minutes for firing will be allowed. Competitors will have to provide their own sandbags and/or benchrest stand and spotting scope. The club has two spotting scopes that can be used by competitors and we also have several wooden rifle rests available. Rifle Classes Issue - Any bolt action military service rifle issued to any nation and in strictly as issued configuration. This means NO modifications are allowed to the rifle. Modified Iron - Any bolt action military rifle issued to any nation and with issue action and barrel. Stocks may be either issue stocks, modified military stocks or sporter stocks. Modified military or sporter stock forearms may not be wider nor flatter on the bottom than the original stock issued for that rifle. Modified military or sporter stocks may not weigh more than the original issued stock. Any trigger and iron sights may be used and glass bedding is allowed. Modified Scope - Same description as Modified Iron above, except a scope up to a maximum of 6x may be used. Variable power scopes must be set to 6x or less. Ammunition: Any safe commercial, military surplus, or reloads with jacketed or cast bullets may be used.

I was wondering if the M40A1 is considered a military bolt gun? If not can "other rifles" pay the fee and shoot, just not be included in the awards categories? I would like to shoot some scoped rifles but don't have anything other than my Remington 700 M40A1 clone that might qualify as a "military bolt". It's usage during the Vietnam war is over forty years ago. My how time flys.

Kevin, Bring it out and shoot it. We just won't include it in the scores. While it was used as a special weapon, it wasn't issued as a service rifle.

Dan,
What about a 1903 with the USMC rear sight leaf? Will that still qualify for "as issued"?
See you on Sunday for highpower.

John, Was it a regular USMC issue item? Will probably be okay, if not you could always shoot it in the modified class.

USMC issued them to their rifle teams...CMP allows them in Springfield matches, for whatever that's worth.

This match was a lot of fun! Seeing what everyone brought to shoot...lots of history there! Seeing what those old rifles are still capable of was an education for me! Thanks to Dan for putting this on, and I'd highly recommend it. Even if you don't own one of these yourself, come out and see these old pieces of history.

Sorry I'm a little late getting a report for the May 20th event posted. We had great weather with 16 shooters firing 24 rifles. We got started close to 5:30 pm thanks to several folks helping with targets and numbers. Several comments were heard about how much fun was had by all. We had several 1903 / 1903A3 class rifles along with some K-31's, a Swede 1896, a Krag, Yugo Mauser, Mosin Nagant and even a 1903/A4.
So come on out to the next match on June 17th. We will try to get started around 5:30pm but that doesn't mean you can't get there later and enter one of the later relays. We finished up at 7:30pm on May 20th. Anyone who can get there early (5:00pm) and help with set-up, it will be appreciated. We also added a "Other Rifle" class which means you can bring anything out to shoot if you don't have a military bolt action. Thank You! Dan Eddington

Just a reminder we will be holding our 2nd Military Bolt Action Benchrest this coming Thursday 6/17 at 5:30pm. The 200 yard range will close for general use at 5:00pm for set-up. We need to put up 30 targets plus numbers and move two shooting benches from the pistol range over to the rifle range. If you can show up early to lend a hand it would help us get started on time.
Also I'm asking everyone to limit yourself to 2 rifles (2 relays) on the initial sign-in. This hopefully will enable everyone a chance to get in fairly soon. If there are open spots on the 3rd and 4th relays after we shoot relays 1 & 2 then please feel free to sign-up again and shoot another rifle or re-enter to shoot the same rifle a second time on the 3rd and 4th relays. I had one fella mention to me the other day that he wanted to bring four rifles to shoot and it got me thinking... hey, this could get out of hand. So that's why I'm asking for the initial two rifle limit. Maybe it won't even be necessary, but I want to be prepared just in case. Hope everyone understands! Thanks for your time, Dan Eddington

We had a total of 7 individual shooters show up Thursday evening 6/17 firing 13 different rifles and 2 re-entries. The weather was very nice so I don't think that contributed to the low turnout of shooters. Ron Springsteen won the modified scope class with very fine score of 100-7x and an impressive 5 shot group of 2.5". Congratulations Ron! Our next Military Bolt Action Benchrest will be held on July 15, 2010 and we hope you can join us. We also have a NRA Highpower scheduled at the KRGC on June 27th and our next CMP M1 for Vets match will be July 10th. Dale Drake has a Centerfire Benchrest coming up at Southern Michigan Gun Club this coming Tuesday June 22nd which will begin at 4:00 PM. Cost is only $5 for two rifles. Thanks! Dan Eddington, KRGC

Here are the results of the July 15, 2010 KRGC Military Bolt Action Shoot. It was a very hot steamy evening, but nine shooters still showed up to shoot 16 entries. Jim Skelding won the issue class shooting his 03/A3 and 110 gr bullets. Dan Eddington won the modified class shooting a M1917 with cast bullets and Ron Springsteen took the modified scope class with his K-31 Swiss. The best 5 shot group of the evening (4.274") was shot by Ron DuBois in the modified scope class using a Springfield 1903 in .30/06 Ackley Improved. A lot of nice 4 shot groups were fired, but it seems that there is always one aggravating flyer that ruins an otherwise nice group and knocks you out of contention.
Our final 2010 Benchrest will be held on August 12th. I'm hoping to have a nice door prize to give away to one lucky shooter that evening. If you have attended all four matches this year you will get four tickets, three matches three tickets, and so on. So the more events you attended the better your chances of winning. Hope to see you there! Dan Eddington

What a great turn-out we had for our last shoot of 2010. We had a total of 15 shooters braving the very hot and humid weather and firing 26 rifles. Some very nice door prizes were awarded in appreciation for attendance, with Bill Martin of Muskegon winning the grand prize of a nice Cadwell Benchrest Stand. We would like to thank "On Target Guns" of Kalamazoo for their donation of the knives and good deal on the Cadwell. The rest of the prizes were purchased with approximately half of your entry fees and the other half going to the club and expenses. There was a total of 14 entries in the Issue Class with Blaine Borkowski firing the best score of 98 with his 03/A3. Dan Eddington had the smallest group of 1.624" in the issue class shooting cast bullets in his 03/A3. The Modified Iron Class had 4 entries with Dan Eddington winning the class with a 96-1x and also firing the smallest group in the class of 4.9" with his 1903 Remington w/peep sights. Modified Scope Class saw 8 entries with Jula Lassila winning the class shooting his Finn M39 w/scope and a score of 97-3x. The smallest group of 3.235" was fired by Ron Springsteen.
