With the Michigan deer hunting season almost here, I'm thinking that there isn't going to be much of one this year or in the next few years. EHD has decimated the deer here in central Barry Co. In the past 2 weeks we've found 6 dead deer on our place without spending hardly any time looking. The deer trails are cold and there are no deer on the trail cams. All of the neighbors are reporting the same thing, and you can't walk a hundred yards in any direction without smelling something dead. Nobody in this area is planning to buy a license or to deer hunt in Michigan. The DNR is claiming there is no evidence that meat from an infected deer would harm humans if properly cooked, however every carcass that has been located so far has remained untouched by coyotes or any other scavenger.....hmmmm How are the deer doing where you are at?

Just bought a place on the IN border a couple months back.
It's high (no water) but has LOTS of sign... - Sign of activity from last year that is, not this.
Low land (with water) is about 1/2 mile up the road. I've seen a whole whopping 3 does prancing around tight to that area.
Went ahead and bought a doe tag anyway. Guess I felt like playing the lottery again after all. Either that or being generous and giving $$ away to the state.
Only way I'm likely to tag anything on my lot is if crops get pulled off in time and/or they get spooked up to me somehow.
Might need to polish up the .22 for squirrel stew instead of venison backstrap..

Im in vicksburg, just off S ave and took 2 does, One was aged at a wopping 61/2 years old. 2nd doe was also older, seen a number of deer this year but i have friends over by fierkeepers who have not seen anything for deer this year, as for coyotes touching them I think its just there are so many where they are infected you just dont see as much activity per carcus. The deer allways head for water as their body temp goes up anything in the low wet areas where most people dont like to walk provide enough cover that they dont need to feed off the deer in more open areas. just my thought,
As for the people for portage who have resisted an urban deer hunt, just wait till it does hit your area, with the number of deer in portage when it does hit your town is going to smell great.

I and the group i hunt with were fortunate. We hunt the 2 week firearm season in Mason county near Scottville. No sign of EHD luckily, but did find two dead bucks with what we assume were arrow wounds that did them in. One appeared to have been dead since early October, the other more recent prior to the Nov 15th opener..always sad to see that also. Anyway lots of deer activity, i myself did manage to bang/flop a coyote 2nd day ofseason, couldnt resist takin the shot...no deer for me though this year.
